Dear Vikar,
I have been reading your site for several
weeks, and so far have managed to read every joke,
and almost every rant. Thank you for the free entertainment.
I just wanted to say that you aren't the only one
out there who feels the way you do. I can't blame
you for hating those corporate assholes who only care
about their bottom line. Indeed, when you are talking
about how companies are rapidly laying off American
employees to help out their bottom line, I am suprised
to see that you haven't mentioned what I consider
the stupidest practices of American corporations.
I see these companies laying off people
in record numbers and outsourcing (especially offshore),
to possibly save a little off their bottom line. Now,
I come from near Detroit, and my family has always
been General Motors employees, and members of the
UAW. Now, I talk to my dad, or my grandfather when
he was alive, and he told me that back 30 years or
so ago you would go days without seeing one imported
car. Now, every other car is a Honda or Toyota or
Nissan. Back in those days, I guess, people had good
jobs, and returned that money to the companies that
rewarded them with job security. Now, I can't blame
people for not having any loyalty to American companies.
Companies like Northwest Airlines are
asking their employees to take pay cuts (for a total
of $40 million in company savings) and telling the
union that the company will go bankrupt without it.
In this case, NWA turned around within hours of the
contracts being finalized, and gave the same amount
in bonuses to the top executives and board. The employees
can't afford to quit, they live paycheck to paycheck.
It's like a hostage situation, where people are waiting
their turn to be shot, but can't do anything about
it. It's pathetic, and what is really pathetic is
that these executives get away with it.
I don't understand how people can get
so worked up about some things, such as guns, abortion,
or gays, but nobody seems to care about this rape
of American workers. Reading your rants about your
company, I think that you understand pretty well what
I am saying.
I personally feel that our current
White House has no business being there, but nobody
in our government has had a shining record in this
area. Yes, I like Clinton, no, I don't like many of
the things he allowed to happen, and yes, I am aware
that he wasn't a good guy. I just have read quite
a bit on Dubya, and know that Clinton was a hell of
a lot better for the American worker.
I don't understand why these companies
are going offshore. The American worker is more productive
than any other worker, works far more hours a week,
and works more uncompensated hours a week (salary
jobs) than any other worker in the world. Granted
that our high schools are turning out kids dumber
than a box of rocks, (thank God my parents sprung
for Catholic high school despite not being Catholic)
but we CAN WORK.
Sorry I don't really know where I'm
going with this e-mail, but I appreciate you taking
the time to read it. Take care, and keep working on
your site. It's really good for making me think about
how much everything will suck in a few years when
I get out of college and into the real
world.
Oh well.
- Andrew C.
Andrew,
It does my heart good to see more awareness of the
corporate machine. I hate it.
There are many things that suck about jobs going oversees
- blue collar and white collar. Just the other day,
I was in a meeting with a bunch of developers (offshore
and onshore) who very comfortably were talking about
the cost benefits of sending more of our work out
to India. And not only were they sending the work
out, they were talking about automating those tasks.
So,
not only were they taking jobs away from American
workers by sending the jobs offshore, they are going
to put offshore people out of work by making programs
that will put them out of a job.
The irony is sickening.
Keep coming back for more rants. There's about 6 in
my head that have yet to be written.
Regards,
Vikar
Dear Vikar,
Hope I can be of assistance to any
of your website visitors who may be interested in
doing something about a few of the things that your
"rant" about (privacy, telemarketers, ID
Theft...) my is included below.
Just for your FYI, another issue that
you may want to rant about is "RFID" &
"corporate snooping" (http://news.com.com/2010-1069-980325.html)
or do an online search on "RFID tags".
Over the next decade you should find
plenty to rant about "nanotechnology applications"
as well - if you have not yet heard much about nanotechnology
don't worry you will - it is partly responsible for
recent breakthroughs in genetics, spy technologies
etc. & will be the future of research, manufacturing
etc. unfortunately there are many unknowns and opportunity
for abuse in the wrong hands...(this article just
starts to touch on some issues -
article )

R.M.,
Yes, and you get more than just a bargain... at Walmart.

Dear Vikar,
When I signed your guest book, I couldn't
think of any good rant suggestions. I have since thought
of some that I would love to hear your thoughts on.
Bad parenting! I swear it's the cause of 99% of society's
ills.
And I don't understand why people can't
figure out how to use birth control. If you don't
want to do the job right, then spare the rest of us
and don't have any! I also can't figure out why people
with kids get tax breaks for it. Do they work harder
than those of us who are childfree? Not only do we
not get a tax break, but we are paying for public
education that we are not "using".
Another thing that drives me insane
is that fact that millions upon millions of animals
are euthanized in this country every year, and yet
I can open up my local newspaper at any time and find
litter after litter of any breed I want for sale.
Stop the madness!
Until we get a handle on the pet population,
breeding anything should be severely restricted. And
I don't want to hear any bullshit about how we must
have pure breeds - I have 2 mutts that are the best
things since sliced bread!
- Lisa H
Lisa,
It's wonderful to hear from people like you.
My wife wrote the childfree
rant you were referring to, however, there are
more on my site that I have written. You may wish
to read the following:
Motherhood
& Mental Illness
Adult
Swim
Minivans
Those were all written by me.
Also, I'm happy that dog lovers like you are about.
My wife and I have two here now - Guinness and Killian.
Killian is a border collie/aussie shepherd mix (we
think) and he fills our lives with joy as he is the
gentlest soul you'd ever love. Guinness is our second
and most likely last pure breed. He's really cute
and ... well... tempermental. He doesn't like anyone
but us. He's the alpha dog of the house despite being
only 14 pounds. Killian is 40 pounds and scared to
death of him. Oh well.
I, personally, am against buying pure breeds only
for the reason that our first dog, Casey - a cocker
spaniel pure bred, died of an inbred disease. Autohemolytic
Anemia was the disease and I'd never want to see anything
else die of that. (Essentially, his entire immune
system turned against his blood cells and he died
of anemia days after we got him to the hospital.)
So, you know where I stand on the "must be pure
breed" asswipes. A dog who is not will love you
to death just the same.
Once again, it was a genuine pleasure to hear from
someone like you.

Vikar
Dear Vikar,
I just found your site the other day,
and I just had to write to say how much I am enjoying
it so far! I totally agree with your point of view
on the rants I have read so far!
I will be checking back frequently.
Thanks for sharing with everyone!
- Krystyna
Krystyna,
Thanks. I write it for people just like you.
If you got something out of anything I've written
- all the better. I'm sorry for not getting back to
you sooner. I've just gotten the PC back from the
shop.
If you've found anything of particular interest, I'd
love to hear about it.
Regards,
Vikar
Dear Vikar,
Alternatively and in answer to another
question, if this is the work of a Fortune 500 employee,
no wonder the economy is in ridiculous shape.
- Virgule
Virgule,
Sad, isn't
it?

Vikar
