Dear Vikar,

I love your website, and love laughing at the jokes, I love your rants, and enjoy following along with your job stories. I really enjoyed the ‘child-free’ rants and reaction. My 2 children are grown and gone. I never believed it was any parent’s right to inflict their spawn on the innocent public – obnoxious kids are everywhere, and their parents are always oblivious. It’s just ironic that the people smart enough to know they don’t want kids would probably make the best parents.

My point (along with the praise) – why not get a vasectomy and forget the birth control forever. My husband, who loved his penis above anything else on the planet, finally agreed to one, and even he had to admit it was no big deal (and believe me, there was no loss of function – within 24 hours we were back at it. Think about it, and throw away the condoms forever.

Love and thanks,

Kath

Kath,

First off, you've made my day. I may smile for a week and it won't even be insanity related.

As far as the childfree rant goes, I'll certainly forward your comments to my wife. She's the real force for the childfree. I'm the real force behind the concept of a refuge for Adults.

I have to stress again, I don't hate kids. Do they annoy me? Yeah. Do I hate them? No, .... they're kids. That's what they do. I believe that it is the nature of a child, by default, to believe he or she has no restrictions until told otherwise. The problem is that most of the new parents out there have taken the philosophy that kids shouldn't be disciplined either verbally or physically. They are either scared to death of causing mental scars or of DYFUS coming after them. Unfortunately, they also have a tendancy to think that they have the cart blanche right to take their undisciplined spawn everywhere they go. The Starbucks story is completely true and the children's lives were extended by my leaving early.

As far as the concept of a vasectomy, my wife has been after me for years. While I can justify it intellectually, I have too many dreams involving John Wayne Bobbit to rationalize it. With my luck, I'll get the one surgeon that develops Parkinson's in the middle of the procedure leaving me to start a career with the Vienna Boys Choir.

Thanks for the letter.

Regards,
Vikar

Vikar,

If you are such a huge fan of George Carlin you would know that HE DID NOT write Words Of Wisdom which you passed off as his writings -
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious, but it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and he carries his banners openly. But the traitor moves among those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alley, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears no traitor he speaks in the accents familiar to his victims and he wears their face and their garments and he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city. He infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist."
(Marcus Tullius Cicero) 743 BC

Craig Allyn B.

Craig,

All Rightee then.

Speaking as an average joe, I apologise. I simply took the submission at face value.

I have lost track of Mr. Carlin's later works, but I can most certainly quote the entire AM/FM album as well as Class Clown and A Place for My Stuff stand up by heart. So, when I DO read words that have his type of flavor in them, I'll print them.
-
"How to act: Never under compulsion, out of selfishness, without forethought, with misgivings.
Don't gussy up your thoughts.
No surplus words or unnecessary actions.
Let the sprit in you represent a man, an adult, a citizen, a Roman, a ruler. Taking up his post like a soldier and patiently awaiting his recall from life. Needing no oath or witness.
Cheerfulness. Without reqiring other people's help. Or serenity supplied by others.
To stand up straight - not straightened."

Vikar,

A possible rant for you: Can you suggest what "In God We Trust" and "under God" both Cold War era additions to the money and the Pledge say about ethics in America where Enron and Gulf War redux are playing?

Beginning to rant, too,
Digby

Digby,

I will give it serious thought.

Dear Vikar,

My husband forwarded your web site to me, because he, too, is a Catholic married in 1994 to a witch. I have only reluctantly discovered it since our marriage!

I don't do Samhain or many props, but my "spells" have the same impact, and I also do strange things like unconsciously blow up all electronics, including Fed Ex beepers and cash registers.

Nice to know that there is someone else out there!

Leslie in Massachusetts

Leslie,

Leslie,

That is the wonderful thing about being in a religion other than Catholicism and Christianity. In Witchcraft and Wicca the big rule is Harm None.

The nature based religions don't require you to go with the crowd and therefore is best for those of us who have found our individuality.

If you don't celebrate Samhain, so be it. What I can tell you is that there is nothing like doing circle during Samhain. It's intense. You should try it with a group. Should you ever find yourself in my neck of the woods I'd certainly love to have you along.

Since the writing of "Living with a Witch" I've found my own path among the pagans. This is after 36 years as a Catholic with a Jesuit education.

I'm much happier.

Regards,
Vikar

Dear Vikar,

Living with a witch was so spot on. Do you get frustrated that you can not share everything that she see's?

My Wife has such a good heart but most people misunderstand her, even me sometimes!

David A.

Thanks David.

Yes, I do get upset because everyone does not understand.

Yes, the perception of the witch/pagan/wicca community is very misunderstood. But, then again, why shouldn't they be misunderstood? The PR against them has been in the works for over 2,000 years.

The worst modern offender being L. Frank Baum. Everyone who has been unenlightened asks me if my wife's skin turns green. I usually answer, "Only when she's seasick."

Since first publishing that article, I, myself, have started walking the road to Wicca and Paganism. This is quite as statement from a man with a Jesuit education. I now find that the works of Joseph Campbell are more interesting than those of any Catholic theology class. The road to Paganism involves a LOT of reading. My wife has often told me that any real witch out there has a degree in comparitive religion, by default.

If your wife is a happy witch and she is truly "harming none" then I see no reason to discourage it. My only advice is that she "feel out" the people she decides to confide her religious beliefs.

Vikar

Dear Vikar,

Since you and I both have the same format of website (ranting), I thought you may be interested in exchanging links, its up to you. http://mor4wd.com/lb

By the way, I enjoyed your rant on children, and how unfair it is to single couples and such. You should at least read my rant on "Why Parent Your Children...", I think you'll share the same point of view with me. Thanks Vik.

- Matt

Dear Matt,

You've got it.
In my Other Stuff section, you will be the 3rd link from the top.

http://www.vikarsrant.net/OtherStuff.htm

(I couldn't bump Mr. Wizard's site (Marzie's Toolbox) as well as Scott Bilker at Debtsmart.com.)

A small word of advice - Get a domain name. Llamabox.com works better than http://mor4wd.com/lb/index.asp

Anything else you need? Like Rants to be posted and referred back to your site? It's not a problem - within reason.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to email me.

Regards,
Vikar
